THE UMASS DOO-WOP SHOP

A group of handsome young guys, all decked out in jeans, black shirts and colorful neckties, brought down the house

in an evening of a cappella joy, comedy and music this month at STEPS THEATRE. Our regular patrons were

completely taken by surprise by the show. Part of our new development plan was to bring a variety of new and different

shows and concerts to our theatre and to the community, and the overwhelmingly positive response

to this electrifying group proved that we are on the right path.

THE UMASS DOO-WOP SHOP

was so well received that we have asked them back for a "special return engagement"

in September. Watch for their return dates! You won't want to miss these "wild and crazy guys" the next time

they rock the house with their uniquely entertaining show!

A SURPRISINGLY "UN-COMMON" MOON AT STEPS

The Un-common Theatre Company's Young Adult series presented a thoughtful staging of

"WELCOME TO THE MOON AND OTHER PLAYS"

by John Patrick Shanley, the Academy Award-winning author of Moonstruck, here at STEPS.

The production, directed by Keith Pinault, featured a cast of six talented actors, playing multiple

characters, in a series of complex and highly entertaining "one-acts".

Mike Texeira's inventive lighting design featured an ever-present, enormous moon, transversing it's cycles as

the stories unfolded in it's capricious glow. The Uncommon Theatre Company has always brought quality

productions to our area, and it was our honor to host this courageous and moving staging of a great collection of plays.

We look forward to their next venture here at STEPS.

SPRING BRINGS A NEW BEGINNING FOR STEPS

Celebrated director Michael La Fleur joins STEPS for restructuring project

With spring weather just around the corner, STEPS  has begun an exciting new process of house cleaning and restructuring that promises a very bright future for STEPS indeed. We are pleased to announce that the critically acclaimed show business expert, and one of STEPS dearest friends and supporters, MICHAEL LA FLEUR has joined our team to help us put our new plans into action. Working closely with STEPS Artistic Director, KEITH MOTTOLA and the dedicated staff, Michael will be a major force in the creation of a new look and more contemporary company. With the entire arts community facing a shaky economy, the need for a smarter and more productive enterprise is essential. STEPS is rolling up it's proverbial sleeves and diving head-on into a new future...one that will offer new and improved  classes in Dance, Theatre Arts and Music instruction, as well as a more efficient business center and stronger client relations.

"We're revisiting everything from class scheduling, production coordination and our teaching staff, to better office functions and improved communications", says Mr. Mottola. "Michael and I have been developing a plan of action over the last few months, and we are very excited about the changes coming to Steps."

Mr. La Fleur and Mr. Mottola have been associated with one another for over 30 years. They both met while working as headlining performers at WALT DISNEY WORLD in Florida. Both were members of the legendary KIDS OF THE KINGDOM show group, the official ambassadors of performance for the Disney company. Following their Disney contracts, La Fleur and Mottola's paths crossed again in numerous theatrical productions across the US, including celebrated tours of Broadway Musicals, convention shows and television projects. For the last few years, Michael has been staging and writing shows across the US and abroad for Disney, Universal Studios, and is a highly sought after director for major regional theatres and high profile corporate events. He currently lives in Las Vegas where he worked with recording Superstar, Celine Dion, on her Caesar's Palace extravaganza, "A New Day". Michael will be jetting back and forth from Vegas to work on productions with The Count Basie Orchestra and several developing shows for the fabulous Las Vegas Strip, as well as a production of "Gutenberg, the Musical" for Shadowland Theatre in the Catskills.

This past summer, Mr. La Fleur asked Mr. Mottola to join him as his choreographer for the multi-million dollar "Glow In The Park Parade" for several Six Flags Parks across the US and in Mexico City. Joining forces with  Gary Goddard (creator of Spiderman-The Ride, Jurassic Park-The Ride, and numerous theme park attractions and shows), Benoit Jutras (composer  for Cirque Du Soleil), Raoul Rodriguez (designer of the Rose Bowl Parade) and costumer Mia Guyzander (Wicked, Disney's Pixar Parade), they created and delivered a nighttime parade experience that made headlines world wide.

"It was during the many hours together on long flights and in our hotel rooms that we started to develop a plan for the revitalization of STEPS. Keith and I work well together, and I think we've come up with a plan that will bring this company to a higher and more productive level of excellence. I'm very optimistic about the future. We've got some amazing things coming up. I'm also looking forward to working with and teaching the bright, young talent at STEPS. They have never ceased to surprise me...it's really them that have kept me coming back each season to work on a show. Now I'll be able to work more closely with everyone in the company. And that makes me happy!", said La Fleur.
