The bar has been raised on our stage shows this past season, and it's going up another notch or two with our next show, "The Wizard of Oz" The challenges of transforming one of the world's best loved motion pictures into a live stage show, that will work in our space, are monumental, but the creative minds behind our production are up to the task. For this staging, new and exciting "state-of-the-art" special effects techniques will be used to bring "unstageable" moments, such as the Kansas twister , to life. Using animation, puppetry and a few eye-popping illusions, this is a show for the entire family that you will not want to miss. Auditions have been completed and the cast has begun their journey to Oz.

STEPS IN LAS VEGAS!!! STEPS directors, Keith Mottola and Arlena Boyle joined former STEPS student, Ben Goldsmith in fabulous Las Vegas for the world premier of "COUNT DOWN WITH BASIE", directed and produced by STEPS consultant, Michael La Fleur. " "COUNT DOWN WITH BASIE" is an interactive theatre experience currently setting it's sights on one of the major casinos on the world famous Las Vegas strip. May 29th, celebrities, high rollers and producers from Los Angeles, New York and Las Vegas, filled The Foundation Room at the exclusive STIRLING CLUB to witness the first incarnation of the show.
The breathtaking foyer of The Stirling Club, Las Vegas' most exclusive private clubs. Set in the 1930's, "COUNT DOWN WITH BASIE", written and conceived by La Fleur, tells the story of a group of performers fighting to keep their nightclub after one of the nation's biggest gangsters comes to claim the place as collateral for an unpaid loan. Jam packed with stunning vocals, big band music, thrilling swing dancers and a zany cast of characters, the show positively raised the roof off of The Stirling Club. Featuring the music and the sounds of The Count Basie Orchestra, this "old Vegas" style supper show had a cast of 25 performers and featured the world renowned Woody Woods and his Ensemble, TV star of Lavern & Shirley, Eddie (Carmine, the Big Ragu) Mekka, Kristy Love (Female vocalist with the world famous Platters), musician and arranger, Dennis Wilson (from The Count Basie Orchestra), TV star Todd Simmonds (from The Sopranos) and the son of Count Basie, Mr. Aaron Woodard. The guest list for the show included legendary comedian Marty Alan, singing and TV star Susan Anton, plus a who's who list of entertainment giants. The show received high praise and "COUNT DOWN WITH BASIE" looks like it has bright future!
La Fleur invited Keith and Arlena to perform a show-stopping tap number in the production. Boyle played the giggling star of burlesque, Kewpie D'Amour and Keith, her gangster beau, Gabie Latatori. They brought the house down with their hilarious scene and tap number. Former STEPS student, Ben Goldsmith played the ever suffering radio star, Cosmo Woodside, a tall and handsome announcer with a comically timid personality off the air. Ben's character was an audience favorite.

Keith, Michael and Arlena backstage before the show We are looking forward to more performance opportunities for STEPS, and are currently reviewing future projects both locally and across the US. One of STEPS greatest assets is being able to offer superior students their first professional job connection. "They spend so much time, money and effort learning this profession. When ever we can, we try to promote our students in the professional world", says La Fleur. "It was a great opportunity for Ben. He was absolutely right for the role, and he did a great job". In fact, Goldsmith so impressed La Fleur that he sent Ben's materials to The Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre. La Fleur is directing the Broadway musical sensation, "Thoroughly Modern Millie", there in August. The casting team at Wohlfahrt Haus was impressed and Ben has been cast as Trevor Greydon, the comical leading man of this madcap musical...Ben's first professional contract.
Former STEPS students, Stephanie Urko and Sam Forgie, were both cast last summer by La Fleur and Mottola for their internationally staged "Glow In The Park Parades" for Six Flags. The state-of-the-art, nighttime attraction is playing in parks across the US and in Mexico City. "We want to see our kids and adults working...", says Mottola. "...and we will do all we can to help open those doors." ****
